What You Need to Know First
Almost every fund here requires your hospital social worker to submit the application, and most pay the landlord, utility or pharmacy directly rather than sending you money. The first move is one sentence to the social worker: “I’d like to apply to every emergency fund you work with. Can we start with B+, Family Reach, NCCS and the Jay Fund this week?” Bring the actual bills, in a parent’s name.
Funds open and close with donations. When we checked (October 2026), Blood Cancer United’s pediatric Urgent Need fund, its ALL co-pay fund and HealthWell’s Pediatric Assistance Fund were all closed to new applicants, and Pinky Swear’s application was being rebuilt. Closed does not mean gone. Sign up for alerts and have the social worker re-check monthly.
New Jersey’s Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund is different: a state program, any income, that reimburses medical expenses after the fact once they pass 10% of your income in a 12-month window. No rent or lost wages, and it pays last. Keep every Explanation of Benefits from day one.
